HazardPrecaution
Electrical ShockUnplug unit or disconnect circuit breaker before accessing internal components.
RefrigerantUse approved recovery equipment. Avoid open flames; refrigerant can produce toxic gas.
Sharp EdgesWear cut-resistant gloves when handling evaporator coils, sheet metal, or glass shelves.
Heavy ComponentsUse proper lifting techniques or a second person when removing compressors or doors.
CapacitorsDischarge capacitors on control boards before handling to prevent shock.

Model Specifications

Component Layout & Access

Key serviceable components and their locations.

  1. Control Board: Behind the top grille. Remove grille by pulling forward.
  2. Evaporator Fans: One in fresh food section (rear wall), one in freezer (back panel).
  3. Condenser Coil: Accessible from rear bottom kickplate. Vacuum regularly.
  4. Compressor: Located at rear bottom, enclosed in sound-dampening casing.
  5. Water Inlet Valve: Behind the lower rear access panel.
  6. Ice Maker: In the freezer compartment, left side.
  7. Damper Assembly: Controls airflow between compartments; located at top rear of refrigerator section.

NOTE: Take photos during disassembly to aid reassembly.

Electrical System

Schematic and wiring diagram reference W-104-XXXX. Main components include the electronic control board, temperature sensors, damper motor, fans, heaters, and compressor relay.

ComponentTest Point / ResistanceVoltage
Compressor (PTC Relay)Run winding: 8-12 Ω, Start winding: 20-40 Ω115 VAC
Evaporator Fan MotorResistance: 200-400 Ω12 VDC
Condenser Fan MotorResistance: 300-600 Ω120 VAC
Defrost HeaterContinuity (20-40 Ω)120 VAC during defrost
Damper Motor5-wire stepper motor. Check for open/short.12 VDC pulsed

Tip: Use a multimeter to verify continuity and voltage at connectors before replacing components.

Refrigeration System

Dual evaporator system (separate for fridge and freezer). Sealed system contains compressor, condenser, capillary tubes, evaporators, and filter-drier.

  1. Evacuation & Charging: Required manifold gauges. High-side pressure: ~150-200 PSI. Low-side: 0-5 PSI (R-600a). Charge by weight: 2.5 oz.
  2. Leak Detection: Use electronic leak detector. Common leak points: evaporator joints, compressor terminals, filter-drier.
  3. Compressor Replacement: Must recover refrigerant first. Use new filter-drier. Braze with nitrogen purge.

WARNING! R-600a is flammable. No sparks or hot work near refrigerant lines. Follow all EPA and safety guidelines.

Control System & User Interface

The main control board (WR55X10985) manages all functions. User interface includes capacitive touch controls on the dispenser panel for temperature, ice/water, and features.

Controls: Fridge Temp (34°F to 46°F), Freezer Temp (-5°F to 5°F), Quick Cool, Quick Freeze, Sabbath Mode, Filter Reset, Dispenser Lock.

Sensor Locations: Fresh Food Evaporator, Freezer Evaporator, Fresh Food Compartment (2), Freezer Compartment, Ambient (behind control panel).

Diagnostic Mode & Error Codes

Enter diagnostic mode: Press and hold "Light" and "Ice Type" buttons on dispenser panel for 5 seconds. Codes will scroll on display.

CodeDescriptionPossible Cause

Clear codes by exiting diagnostic mode or unplugging unit for 1 minute.

Disassembly & Repair Procedures

Common repair steps for authorized technicians.

  1. Replace Water Filter: Twist old filter counterclockwise. Insert new filter (RPWFE), twist clockwise until it stops.
  2. Replace Dispenser Control Board: Remove screws behind dispenser cover. Disconnect harnesses.
  3. Replace Evaporator Fan: Remove rear panel in compartment. Unplug connector, remove mounting screws.
  4. Replace Ice Maker: Remove ice bucket, disconnect water line and electrical connector, remove mounting screws.
  5. Replace Main Control Board: Remove top grille. Disconnect all harnesses, noting positions. Remove mounting screws.
  6. Clean Condenser Coil: Remove kickplate. Use a vacuum with brush attachment or coil brush.

Parts List & Exploded Views

Key replacement parts (Part Numbers are subject to change; verify before ordering).

Refer to official GE parts catalog for diagrams and current part numbers.

Performance Testing

After repair, verify proper operation.

  1. Temperature Pull-Down: Set fridge to 37°F, freezer to 0°F. Unit should reach set points within 24 hours in a 70°F ambient.
  2. Defrost Cycle: Should initiate every 6-12 hours of compressor run time for ~25 minutes.
  3. Dispenser Function: Water flow: ~8 oz in 10 seconds. Ice production: ~4 lbs per day.
  4. Seal Check: Close door on a dollar bill; it should hold firmly when pulled.
  5. Noise Check: Listen for abnormal sounds from compressor, fans, or water valve.
